State of the Tobacco Control

The 6th annual State of the Tobacco Control: 2007 report was released on January 10, 2008. Twenty-one states have passed comprehensive smokefree legislation, up from just two states in 2002. The growth in the number of strong smokefree workplace laws nationwide is a positive response to the American Lung Association’s Smokefree Air 2010 Challenge, a campaign launched in 2006 to make all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, 100 percent smokefree by 2010. While progress has been made since the first State of Tobacco Control was released six years ago, the tragedy remains that over 438,000 people – mothers, fathers, uncles, aunts, grandfathers, loved ones – die each year from tobacco related diseases.
