The American Lung Association of Oregon (ALAO) supports tobacco-free campus initiatives at all colleges and universities - all students, staff, and visitors should have the right to breathe clean air and enjoy a healthy campus environment regardless of where they happen to be enrolled or employed. We applaud those campuses that have adopted tobacco-free campus policies or are preparing to do so, including the University of Oregon where the University Senate recently endorsed moving towards a smokefree campus
We encourage the seven Oregon University System campuses to make their premises tobacco-free. In September 2007, Oregon Health & Science University (OUS affiliate) became the first university in Oregon to implement a 100% tobacco-free campus policy. At other OUS campuses, policies range from no outdoor smoking restrictions to smoking prohibited within 25 feet of building entrances. At all OUS campuses, smoking is prohibited in buildings (including campus housing) and in university vehicles.
