Smokefree Parks

The American Lung Association of Oregon and community partners are working towards smokefree parks throughout the state. Smokefree park policies protect people from secondhand smoke, support tobacco users who would like to quit, and reinforce healthy lifestyles for kids. Read the The Case for Smokefree Outdoor Areas.

Recent Successes

Portland City Commissioners have taken a great first step in making Portland Parks smokefree. In February 2007 they upgraded an earlier smoking restriction proposal to include additional areas. Thanks to everyone who contacted Mayor Potter and/or Portland Commissioners to show their support for smokefree parks.

Smoking is now prohibited within 25 feet of all playgrounds and picnic tables in Portland Parks, as well as in all of Pioneer Courthouse Square including its sidewalks. Additionally, the Parks Director has the authority to designate any other areas of the park as smokefree.

This is just a first step for Portland. The City Council is also exploring designated smoking areas at Portland International Raceway and further smoking restrictions in areas such as city parks’ sports fields. If you live or play in Portland, please continue to let City Commissioners know you want to see Portland Parks completely smokefree.
