Several initiatives throughout the state are expanding the number of worksites and public places that are 100% tobacco-free. As the trend to tobacco-free continues, college graduates will encounter places of employment that are increasingly less accepting of tobacco use.
Oregon Head Start PreKindergarten – The American Lung Association of Oregon is partnering with the Oregon Head Start Association, Oregon Department of Education, and Oregon Public Health Division to establish 100% tobacco-free policies at all Oregon Head Start sites.
Oregon K-12 Schools – All K-12 school districts are required by Oregon Administrative Rule to be 100% tobacco-free on all school grounds.
OHSU: A Tobacco-Free Campus policy went into effect September 17, 2007. No smoking or tobacco use is allowed indoors or outdoors on OHSU premises.
Oregon DHS: The Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS) tobacco-free campus policy goes into effect May 30, 2008, affecting 45 worksites throughout the state that are wholly owned or controlled by DHS. The policy will prohibit the use of all tobacco products in interior and exterior spaces at all times.
Tobacco-free Hospitals - Step Up!, founded in 2006, is a statewide partnership to improve health by supporting hospitals to:
- Make the hospital campus tobacco-free
- Provide effective stop-smoking benefits for all employees
- Ask, advise, and assist all patients to quit tobacco
- Lead other local businesses to curb tobacco use
